Exactly. For some going to a conference or retreat is the best chance they get focusing on their writing. When I was still at the beginning of my theater design career, decades ago, a journalist friend taught me I could go for a boat ride, go out on the town, do whatever, and "the work" continued on another level. No need to stay inside and sit behind your desk all day, is what he said.

Once you're used to that you can live and breathe creativity. These days I long for the time when my at least one of my books is finished, for it's only then that I feel I will take a real break. In the meanwhile a trip to the coast, total change of environment, looks like a wonderful retreat.

LOL! But that's called living your life. You do need to 'refill the well' on a daily basis. See friends, go to museums, take a trip to a place you've never been before, even if it's only half an hour away from home. Take a class in something you've never tried before. They all feed back, sometimes in unexpected ways, to your writing.

It's such a difficult balance to strike - between the solitude required to write productively and the human need for companionship, competition, and context. I really enjoyed this thoughtful post. Seek out another retreat? Yes! Having one or two you trust on your annual calendar gives shape and focus to your writing year. :)

Something funny happened on the way to the opera, in a manner of speech.
I will write about that in one of the next blog posts. By embarking on the Health Activist Writers Month Challenge I once again got off track :-) At least I was able to bend the prompts to my own (writer's) hand, but I don't need prompts to write, I need to focus on editing my existing book and perhaps write a script this month. Hee, hee. Thought provoking indeed!

I haven't painted no, but I do feel the urge coming on.
In 2005 I illustrated a family cookbook with pen and ink drawings. That proved to be hard on my hand and wrist.
In my writing den I've created collages on the wall. I'm thinking creating collage/ fabric art of the imagery. We'll see. I love the act of making brush strokes. First I've got to finish my book. It used to be that I wrote in the morning and painted in the afternoon, maybe I'll get back to doing that.

Sending you lots of love, Judith. How proud you must be of your mum for being so ahead of her time. Reproductive choices are our right as women, and its not for men or anyone to judge as you say, what goes in or out of our bodies. I agree that without the pill there would be a great deal more misery in this world, and it's sad when people, especially men, don't realize it. It's always a joy to find out someone is reading my posts, and dares, or cares) to respond.

And you really got the intention of the architects (Dutch firm OMA and local firm LMN) and the client SPL.
Accessibility, immediate access for people who may have trouble finding their way through the library, whether because of ESL, parents with strollers, and now hearing and vision impaired patrons as well.

This library was made possible by a bond measure "Libraries for All".

I hope your town folk will get what they and you hope for. To me libraries are my home away from home, no matter where I am, no matter how large or small.

Thanks for stopping by again. I was so thrilled to find your book list for graphic novels for children and Young Adults!

Especially the one about The Resistance during WWII in France, caught my attention, and a book you recommended earlier the Anne Frank House authorized graphic novel about Anne Frank I've passed on as well already! They're both on my list now.

There's nothing like a teacher who has an open mind and keeps venturing onto unknown terrains. As for being a *new advocate* those are often the most enthusiastic.

This is beautiful and I love your comment in the box. I think it's important to step out of our comfort zones - experiment, take risks and learn from triumphs and mistakes. Great post and I thank you for your comments on mine.

I think it is so cool you got to meet and interact with Art Speigelman. I have to admit that I am a relatively new advocate for sequential art books/ graphic novels. But they are SUCH POWerFUl learning tools.

It all gets back to stepping out of our comfort zones...
